Sabina Passamonti has a degree in Medicine with a PhD in biochemistry. She carries out research on the membrane transport of bilirubin and flavonoids, in particular anthocyanins. She is the author of 119 publications, H-index 32, personal total IF 589. She has shed light on the gastric absorption of anthocyanins, their pharmacokinetics and distribution in the brain and their action in the cardiovascular system. She has demonstrated the specific interaction between anthocyanins and the hepatic transport of bilirubin, thus identifying them as molecular probes of this genetically orphan function. She has obtained European funding from the INTERREG cooperation programs to coordinate two major research & innovation network projects involving 21 institutional partners and financed by European structural funds for around 4 million euros (Trans2Care and Innov-H2O). She has participated in the Agrotur II project, continuing the activities of the previous Agrotur project, and in the AdriAquaNet project. She now participates in the iNEST-Interconnected Nord-Est Innovation project, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), affiliated with spoke 4 (University of Trento).

She is a member of the doctoral board in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science. In her working group she trained 12 doctoral students, 30 foreign researchers for a total of 12 years and hired 25 researchers with various contracts for a total duration of 52 years. You have held various positions in academic bodies and are currently part of the University research evaluation commission. She has been a visiting professor of biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana for a decade and has been an expert of the European Food Safety Authority since 2020. She holds the national scientific qualification for the role of full professor in 2012 and 2016. Assistant professor since 1992.
