Paola Lorenzon is Associate Professor of Physiology at the University of Trieste, since 2002.

Professor Lorenzon got her degree in Biological Sciences and Ph.D in Biochemistry at the University of Trieste. She had her research training at the Department of Pharmacology (University of Milano), at the Scientific Institute S. Raffaele (Milano) and at the University of Trieste. She has been visiting scientist at the Institute of Pathophysiology of the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and at the Institute of Physiology II of the University of Bonn (Germany).

The main interest of her research activity is the nerve-muscle communication and the skeletal muscle physiology, including muscle plasticity and impact of ageing on the neuromuscular system. In particular, her work has been focusing on the molecular mechanisms involved in the modulation of the peripheral synaptic transmission, skeletal muscle adaptation and regeneration in physiological and pathological conditions.

Her main findings in this research area are the following:

  • characterisation of the effect of ageing on the regenerative potential of skeletal muscle (Exp Gerontol, 2004; Cell Calcium, 2008).
  • characterisation of functional properties of the skeletal muscle progenitors (J Physiol, 2000; Exp Cell Res, 2002; Acta Physiol (Oxf), 2015);
  • identification of strategies for enhancing the regenerative potential of the skeletal muscle (Free Radic Biol Med, 2012; J Muscle Res Cell Motil, 2015; Biomaterials, 2015; Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Cell Res, 2019; Exp Cell Res, 2019);
  • regulation of the neuromuscular transmission (Neuroscience, 2018).

Professor Lorenzon has published more than 50 scientific papers. She has been reviewer for international Journals (FASEB J, Cell & Tissue Res, Toxicon, Exp Cell Res), for national grant agencies (MIUR) and international Foundations (AFM, Association Francaise contre les Myopathies).

Professor Lorenzon has been Coordinator of Ph.D programmes and member of the Ethics Committee at the University of Trieste. At present, she is Coordinator of the International Master’s Degree in Neuroscience.
