Paola Lorenzon is Associate Professor of Physiology at the University of Trieste, since 2002.

Professor Lorenzon got her degree in Biological Sciences and Ph.D in Biochemistry at the University of Trieste. She had her research training at the Department of Pharmacology (University of Milano), at the Scientific Institute S. Raffaele (Milano) and at the University of Trieste. She has been visiting scientist at the Institute of Pathophysiology of the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and at the Institute of Physiology II of the University of Bonn (Germany).

The main interest of her research activity is the nerve-muscle communication and the skeletal muscle physiology, including muscle plasticity and impact of ageing on the neuromuscular system. In particular, her work has been focusing on the molecular mechanisms involved in the modulation of the peripheral synaptic transmission, skeletal muscle adaptation and regeneration in physiological and pathological conditions and in extreme environments.

Her main findings in this research area are the following:

  • characterisation of functional properties of the adult skeletal muscle fibres;
  • regulation of the neuromuscular transmission;
  • identification of strategies for enhancing the regenerative potential of the skeletal muscle;
  • characterisation of the effect of ageing and microgravity on adaptive and regenerative potential of the skeletal muscle.

Professor Lorenzon has published 60 scientific papers in international Journals. She has been reviewer for international Journals, for national grant agencies and international Foundations.

Professor Lorenzon has been Coordinator of Ph.D programmes, member of the Ethics Committee and Coordinator of the International Master’s Degree in Neuroscience at the University of Trieste. At present, she is Coordinator of OPBA at University of Trieste.
