Bruna Scaggiante has the degree in Biology cum laude in 1984 and the PhD in Biochemistry in 1992 and since 1990 she is Assistant Professor in Molecular Biology : from 1990 to 2003 at the Medicine Faculty of the University of Udine and from 2003 at the University of Trieste.

Her research interest has been focused on the development of nucleic acids as therapeutics for tumors: triple-helix forming oligonucleotides to down-regulate genes or oligonucleotide aptamers acting as antiproliferative drugs in cancer cells. In particular, she has identified GT oligomer sequences able to recognize eEF1A protein and exerting antiproliferative effects on leukemic and solid human tumor cells, without significantly affecting normal cell viability. Moreover, she has highlighted some roles of eEF1A protein family in the development and progression of human cancers. Nowadays, her topic research is the identification of cancer biomarkers in liquid biopsy. She has published 50 peer-reviewed papers in international scientific journals, and she has two patents on aptamers. She is also interested to study the relation between lifestyles and cancer incidence in the population.

Since 2011 she is in member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Clinical Oncology ; since 2013 member of the Editorial Board of Oncology Discovery; since 2014 she of the Editorial Board of Cancer Scholoxy.org.; since 2018 member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Biomedicine; since 2020 is Topic Editor of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

From 2013 to 2016 she has been member of the Ethical Committee “Comitato Etico Regionale Unico” FVG.

From 2017 to 2020 she is member of the Ethical Committee of the University of Trieste.

From 2017 to 2020 she is member of the Ethical Committee for the Clinical Practice of the Hospital “Nucleo Etico per la Pratica Clinica” di ASUITS

Since 2009 she is President of the Trieste section of Italian League to fight cancer "Lega Italiana alla Lotta contro i Tumori “(LILT), a Public Health Non-Profit Authority.

At the University of Trieste she is on the board of Professors, as Aggregate Professor: from 2003 to 2019 for degree in Biotechnology, since 2013 for the degree in Science and Medical Technology, since 2011 for the Master degree in Chemistry, since 2010 for the degree in Techniques of Biomedical Laboratory, since 2004 for the specialty of Dermatology. From 2013 to 2016 she has been vice-coordinator of the degree in Techniques of Biomedical laboratory.
