Cristina Lagatolla is Researcher in Microbiology at the University of Trieste since 1998.

She has a B.S. degree in Biology (with honours) from the University of Trieste and a Ph.D. in Microbiology at the University of Genua.

Her research interest focuses on genetic determinants responsible of bacterial pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance.

She studied several bacterial species, mostly Gram negative, which cause nosocomial infections, paying particular attention to epidemiological features of their resistance determinants. Among her main contribution to the field:

  • Characterization of an endemic E. faecium strain (Microb Drug Res. 2018)
  • Metallo-beta-lactamase production in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (EID 2000 and 2004; Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2005; J Clin Microb 2006; MDR 2010) and in Klebsiella pneumoniae (Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2015)
  • The involvement of exopolysaccharide production in the pathogenicity of Klebsiella pneumoniae (Int. J Biol Macromol 2019 and 2020) and Burkholderia cepacia (FEMS Microbiol Lett 2002; Carbohydr Res 2010; Innate Immun 2012)

Dr. Lagatolla has 35 papers published in international scientific journals and is referee for some of them, including Microorganisms, Diag Microb and Inf Dis, IJERPH, Microb Drug Res.
