Francesca Malfatti is a tenured assistant professor in microbiology at the University of Trieste, since March 2020. In 1999, she received her B. Sc.- M. Sc. at the University of Trieste in the field of environmental biology. In 2009, she obtained her PhD degree in Marine Biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO, University of California San Diego, UCSD) working in the laboratory of Dr. Farooq Azam. She was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at SIO until 2014. Thank to a CoFund Marie Skłodowska-Curie research grant, she moved back to Italy at OGS (Italian National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, in Trieste). In 2016, she became an OGS researcher in the Oceanography Section.
She is part of the center for chemical innovation CAICE (Center for Aerosol Impacts on Chemistry of the Environment; UCSD, SIO) funded by NSF (National Science Foundation, USA) that studies how sea-spray aerosol particles influence atmospheric chemistry and climate.
Malfatti’s research focuses on the study of marine microorganisms from micro- to macroscale within the grand biogeochemical cycle of carbon in the environment.
Her multidisciplinary and mechanistic approach enables her to investigate a wide range of ecosystems from the oceanic water column to the water-sediment interface and to the sea-spray aerosol particles in the atmosphere.
Professor Malfatti has received and international award in 2010: IRPE Prize (International Recognition of Professional Excellence) from the International Ecology Institute (Hamburg, Germany) for her discovery of microscope association among marine pelagic microbes. She has published more than 30 articles on international journals.
