Biosketch

Francesco Marcatto is an assistant professor (Tenured/RTD-b) in Work and Organizational Psychology (M-PSI/06) at the Life Sciences Department of the University of Trieste.

He earned his Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Trieste in 2009, where he later worked as a post-doc and contract researcher.

From 2015 to 2021, he was the co-founder and scientific director of Mindiply Ltd. (London & Brighton, UK), a start-up specializing in the development of evidence-based software applications dedicated to managing workgroups, project and task management, and shared decision-making (www.mindiply.com).

For several years, he has taught Work and Organizational Psychology in in the psychology programs of the University of Trieste.

Currently, he coordinates the Work & Organizations Lab at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste. His research activity mainly includes the following two research lines: (1) basic and applied research on organizational well-being (investigation of relationships between constructs, evaluation of the effectiveness of prevention interventions, development of new theoretical models) and (2) development and testing of new psychometric tools for the evaluation of constructs related to organizational well-being (e.g., work-related stress, job satisfaction, turnover intention, personality dimensions associated with workplace deviance).

Francesco Marcatto is the author of several articles published in international peer-reviewed journals. He is a full member of the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP), an international member of the American Psychological Association (APA), and an affiliated member of the Italian Association of Psychology (AIP) in the Psychology for Organizations section. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for several international journals of the field and as a review editor for the journal Frontiers in Psychology (Organizational Psychology section) since 2021.

Research

The Work & Organizations Lab focuses on both basic and applied research mainly in the following areas:

Organizational Well-being

The aim of research in this area is to identify the factors influencing organizational well-being and how they interact with each other. This involves conducting cross-sectional and longitudinal studies to develop new theoretical models predictive of outcomes at both individual levels (e.g., work-related stress, job satisfaction, work engagement) and organizational levels (e.g., productivity, turnover). Another objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions implemented to promote organizational well-being.

Development and Testing of New Measurement Tools

Research in this area aims to develop new psychometric tools for measuring key constructs of organizational well-being, such as work-related stress, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions. Examples of instruments developed by members of the laboratory include the Perceived Occupational Stress scale (Marcatto et al., 2022) and the Satisfaction with Work Scale (Marcatto et al., 2022). Additionally, efforts are made to translate, adapt, and validate existing psychometric tools, ensuring their reliability and validity through rigorous verification and comparison procedures. An example is the Italian version of the Dark Tetrad at Work scale (Marcatto et al., 2024).

In addition to traditional psychometric instruments, studies are also conducted exploring the possibility of using physiological data as indicators of well-being at work, such as measuring levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) as a biomarker of work-related stress (Marcatto et al., in press).

The research activity of the laboratory also addresses themes of risk perception and communication, as well as group decision-making processes.
