Maurizio Romano is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste. He has studied at the University of Trieste for a B.Sc. in Biology and a Ph.D. in Clinical and Experimental Pathology.

My scientific career started with studies on inflammation and characterization of pathogenic mechanisms in different diseases caused by splicing control defects. While studying splicing defects associated with human diseases, as part of a research project on Cystic Fibrosis, I contributed to the identification of the nuclear protein TDP-43 as a CFTR exon 9 pre-mRNA splicing regulator, in the early 2000s. Since then, I have undertaken a detailed characterization of the functions of this multitasking factor and altogether these studies propelled my interest for neurodegenerative disease, after the initial implication of TDP-43 in the pathogenesis of FTLD and ALS, in 2006.
