Gabriele Grassi has been consultant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, University Hospital of Cattinara, Trieste, from 2003 to 2007. In 2007 he became associated Professor in Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology in the department of Life Sciences, University of Trieste. In 2014 he got the habitation as full professor.

Professor Grassi has a degree in Medicine from the University of Trieste. He got his PhD at the International Center for Genetic Egineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in Trieste; he was then visiting fellow at the National Institutes of Health (Human Genetic Branch, National Institute of Child Heritable Disorders) Bethesda, Maryland, USA (1995-1997), and subsequently he has been Scientist assistant in the Department of Molecular Pathology of the University of Tuebingen, Germany (1997-2003).

His research interest focuses on the development of nucleic acid based drug (NABDs) such as miRNA, siRNA and aptamer with therapeutic properties mainly against tumour diseases. The research interest is focussed also on the identification of suitable delivery systems for NABDs. The group also works on the identification of the molecular mechanisms of different clinical used drugs. Finally, the group works on the development of novel diagnostic/monitoring tests for cancer and non-cancer pathologies.

Professor Grassi has 135 papers published in international scientific journals and he is author of two patents about siRNAs/aptamers and one patent about a novel method for the monitoring of lung function.

Prof Grassi is in the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Gastroenterology, Current Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutics. He is also member of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry.

In the period 2009-2015 Prof Grassi has been Chairman of the board of professors, Master degree in Medical Biotechnology, University of Trieste. In the period 2013-15 Prof Grassi has been Chairman of the board of professors, Master degree in Functional Genomic, University of Trieste. Since November 2015 Prof Grassi is member of the didactic commission of the degree in Medicine and is responsible for the courses of the first year of the degree in Medicine. Since November 2019 Prof Grassi is member of the restricted council of Department of life Sciences.
