Risk Assessment of Genetically Modified Food and Feed. The role of EFSA

In the European Union, the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is regulated through a legal framework. According to EU legislation, GMOs can only be authorized for placing on the EU market following a scientific assessment of any risks that they may pose to human and animal health and the environment. In this contest, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) provides scientific advice on the safety of GM plants, before they are authorised for use as food or feed and/or for cultivation in the European Union. An overview of the different parts of such scientific assessment will be given, with particular focus on the assessment of the toxicological profile of the GM plants.
